Kitten insurance can start from 8 weeks old, helping owners plan for eligible unexpected veterinary costs while their cat is still young. Cover choices include Time Limited, Maximum Benefit and Lifetime veterinary-fee structures. Initial exclusions apply to new accidents, injuries or poisoning incidents in the first 3 days and illnesses in the first 14 days.

Starting kitten insurance at 8 weeks

Insurance is designed for new and unforeseen events. Pre-existing conditions are not covered by the current Argos policy wording. Argos also excludes illnesses arising in the first 14 days and accidents, injuries or poisoning incidents arising in the first 3 days, although it says these initial waiting-period exclusions can be waived in qualifying switching circumstances with proof of continuous prior cover.

Kitten Time Limited, Maximum Benefit and Lifetime options

Time Limited cat cover provides £2,500 or £4,000 per eligible condition for up to 12 months. Maximum Benefit provides £2,000 or £5,000 per eligible condition with no 12-month condition window, but the condition pot does not reset each year. Lifetime cat cover has annual veterinary-fee levels of £1,000, £3,500 or £7,000, subject to the selected policy, continuous renewal and policy terms.

Benefits beyond the vet bill

Depending on the policy, cat insurance can include benefits for advertisement and reward if a kitten or cat goes missing, theft or straying, emergency cattery fees and specified travel costs. Veterinary-fee benefits can also extend to certain complementary treatment, physiotherapy, behavioural illness and treatment abroad. If veterinary treatment is needed temporarily abroad, Argos says the overseas vet must be paid first and the claim reported after returning home.

Routine kitten care is different

Vaccinations, parasite control, microchipping, neutering, food and routine health checks are predictable ownership costs and are not covered routine care. A kitten does not have to be vaccinated for Argos to insure it, but Argos will not cover vet costs for an illness preventable by vaccination if the owner failed to vaccinate as recommended by their vet.

Eligibility and later excess changes

A new cat policy can be started up to the cat's 10th birthday, after which existing cover can continue subject to the policy terms. Argos does not insure cats used for commercial breeding or monetary gain. The current cat product page also says the advertised £99 vet-fee excess changes when a cat reaches 10 years old to the greater of £99 or a 20% contribution toward each vet claim; check the current quotation and policy wording for the exact excess.

Choosing the right limit

Think about how much of an unexpected vet bill you could comfortably fund yourself, whether you want the possibility of annual renewal for an ongoing eligible condition, and how the excess interacts with the headline limit. Higher cover can provide more headroom, but premiums can also differ.

Policy details matter: limits, excesses and additional benefits vary by cover level. Pre-existing conditions are not covered by the current Argos policy wording.
